PM Modi launches gold monetization scheme

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched three schemes to lure tonnes of gold from households into the banking system. The Gold Monetisation Scheme (GMS), 2015 will offer option to resident Indians to deposit their precious metal and earn an interest of up to 2.5 per cent; while under the Sovereign Gold Bonds Scheme, investors can earn an interest rate of 2.75 per cent per annum by buying paper bonds.

Modi also unveiled the first ever Indian gold coin and bullion, bearing national emblem Ashok Chakra on one side and Mahatma Gandhi's image engraved on the other side.

Bangladesh hands top ULFA leader over to India

Bangladesh handed the founder of a militant separatist group to India, a rebel leader that for years New Delhi had fought to extradite. Anup Chetia founded the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) more than three decades ago and had been imprisoned in Bangladesh for the last 18 years after being charged with staying in the country illegally and unlawful possession of foreign currencies.


World Science Day for Peace and Development 2015 observed

Jitu Rai won silver in 13th Asian Shooting Championship

IDBI bank may be merged with private lender

The government has hired SBI Capital Markets to draw up plans for the sale of a strategic stake in IDBI Bank and is open to a range of options including merger with a nonstate lender and preferential allotments to institutions of sound financial standing.


RBI includes Bandhan Bank in second schedule list

According to the Reserve Bank, newly launched Bandhan Bank has been included in the second schedule list, making it eligible for loans from the central bank at bank rate. The name of Bandhan Bank Limited has been included in the Second Schedule to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 with notification dated September 3.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been ranked as the world’s ninth most powerful person by Forbes magazine in a 2015 list which is topped by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Modi was placed 14th in the 2014 Forbes list of world’s powerful people.

Heena Sindhu won gold in 13th Asian Shooting Championship

Election Commission of India on 8 November 2015 announced the results of the 2015 Assembly elections of Bihar. The elections were held in 5 phases between 12 October and 5 November 2015 for 243 assembly seats.Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), JANATA DAL (UNITED) (JD(U)) and Indian National Congress (INC) emerged as the winner of the election with thumping two-third majority. RJD, a part of the grand Alliance with 80 seats emerged as the largest party.


Nuclear capable surface-to-surface Agni-IV missile successfully test-fired

Indian Army’s Strategic Forces Command (SFC) on 9 November 2015 successfully test-fired surface-to-surface Agni-IV missile. The 4000-km range nuclear capable missile was test-fired from Abdul Kalam (Wheeler) Island off the Odisha coast. SFC is entrusted with the task of handling strategic weapons of the country.

India announces FDI reforms in 15 sectors

India eased foreign direct investment norms in sectors including mining, defence, civil aviation and broadcasting, in a bid to drum up investment and speed up growth. According to the government's release, "The crux of these reforms is to further ease, rationalise and simplify the process of foreign investments in the country and to put more and more FDI proposals on automatic route instead of government route where time and energy of the investors is wasted."


GE, Alstom land $5.6 billion deals to supply Indian railway

General Electric and Alstom have won contracts worth a combined $5.6 billion to supply India's railways with new locomotives, as the vast but dilapidated state-owned network looks to foreign companies to help it modernise.
