Teacher's Day

I, like everyone else, have had numerous teachers through my school and college years. I had teachers outside the formal environment – coaching classes, music classes, dance classes, cooking classes – in the semi-formal environments. It is the norm to remember one’s best teachers in the formal or semi-formal environment on this day – to me it was the elderly music teacher at school who made me aware of my abilities; the Maths teacher in high school who apart from teaching excellent Maths taught me presentation skills that shaped my career; the math tuition teacher who treated me like her child and made sure I did well in all subjects; the English teacher at school who took personal interest in my non-academic abilities and pushed the lazy me to become a well-rounded person. Many of them I am not in touch with today. A couple of them have left the mortal world and I remember them very often.

I, however, also remember the conventionally not so good teachers. And I thank them from the bottom of my heart for being there. Be it the person who hated her job so much that she had spared no mercy for four-year old tiny tots whom she slapped without any apparent reason; the lady who taught wrong things and had the heart to say “Go to your mother’s school” to any child who tried to do her homework correctly; or the men whose inferiority complexes were evident in the way they treated 10-12 year olds; and the creepy souls who awarded less marks for no reason and spoiled careers - it is to them that I owe my ability to revere the good ones.

But, most of all, I always believe that every person whom I have ever encountered has knowingly or unknowingly taught me something. I have learnt from people from all walks of life. My friends, my colleagues, my superiors, my immediate and extended family, my neighbours, random people on the road, in the trains, in the market… just about anyone and everyone everywhere. The sincerity of the domestic help, the serenity of evidently the most unhappy extended family member, the resilience of a family who did exceedingly well in life after an accident that literally changed their faces by making them undergo plastic surgeries, the dedication of a vet couple who treat street dogs without expecting anything in return,… I can just go on and on. Observing these people has taught me how to live life – inculcating even a few of these qualities in myself will take me a lifetime.

Again, there are the ones who taught me what not to be. These people seemed to say, “See what will be of you, if you ever be like me!” These people have been as good teachers as the others. It almost is like a divine design – each human being is different – each human being has the free will to learn and rise. Often a single person teaches so much of “be like me” and “don’t be like me” at the same time! The “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” that manifests itself in such a balanced manner in all human beings is a blessing. It is just about being aware and wanting to take them as teachers.

On this Teacher’s day, I thank all fellow human beings, for just being there and for being themselves!

Newspaper Vendor to get into IIM-C; Kudos to N Shiva Kumar
If a good underdog story is what you are looking for, you are at the right place. Not just an underdog story, we would call it heroics. Heroics, which generally go unnoticed. We, hereby, plan on bringing you stories of all the heroics Indian education system has ever witnessed, starting with N Shiva Kumar, a newspaper vendor who will walk down the corridors of Indian Institute of Management - Calcutta as a PGP student.

Background:

Shiva, 23 years old engineering student from Banaswadi, is the son of a truck driver and an illiterate mother. He started working as a newspaper delivery boy and for his debt-ridden family the Rs 150 he would bring home was a huge relief. Currently studying in the eighth semester of Computer Science Engineering at Bangalore Institute of Technology, he sold flowers that his mother strung into garlands by the roadside when he was just 10 years old.

He worked as a newspaper delivery boy since he was in Class 6 and became a vendor in Class 10. After school, he  would borrow a cycle and identify new buildings and residents. He would approach them for business and ensured the papers reached before 6 a.m. He had his own targets for a month, he said explaining his marketing tactics. He still delivers the paper along with four of his delivery boys. He managed to balance his studies and part-time job and cracked the IIM entrance test.

When asked of future plans, N Shiva Kumar wants to start a charity educational institution by the name of 'Educate India' through which he can help the underprivileged gain some education. He wants to work extremely hard at the  IIM where he will study finance and make a mark amongst the brightest minds and CAT 2012 all India toppers especially.

In a nation where students from socially weak backgrounds have been known to be harassed in “top rated institutions”, his discretion is understandable. By the time you  will read this article, N Shiva Kumar will already have become a celebrity at the national level.

Kudos to you N Shiva Kumar!!

NMAT Dummy Candidate Scam

In a sensational development, six people have been arrested for sending dummy candidates in place of 87 aspirants who appeared for NMAT, the aptitude test for admission to various MBA programmes of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS). The institute discovered the scam when its admission office found a discrepancy in the photographs of the candidates in the hall tickets of the written test and those of the GD-PI.
A Joint Team of Cyber Cell and Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police nabbed the accused, who mostly hail from Northern India. They reached out to NMAT aspirants via coaching classes and career guidance institutes, promising high scores in the written test, which virtually guaranteed admission to the desired programmes.
Each aspirant was charged with amounts as high as Rs 20 lac in return for the high scores.
The gang used to send the dummy candidate for taking the written exam by forging the photograph in hall ticket along with the relevant ID proof. The original aspirant needed to appear only for the GD – PI, this time with genuine documents.
In another relevant news, 22 students of the institute who graduated this year, were also found to have used similar means to crack the exam in 2011. These students have secured placements in reputed companies, through the campus placement process. Although the police have not yet contacted those companies, the students are set to lose their jobs as their degree stands cancelled.

Spotlight - Arab Spring
In today's fast paced world, it's difficult to keep track of all the events happening across the world. Yet, there are events which have changed the course of history and which we all need to know about. TESTfunda Spotlight turns the spotlight on such major events which have impacted people around the world and provides an in-depth coverage of events . One of such events is the Arab Spring - a string of protests and demonstrations against the rulers of the Arab countries. Many of these protests proved successful and succeeded in overthrowing the rulers, whereas some others were unfruitful. In countries such as Syria, these protests have translated into wars and are still continuing with heavy losses to life and property.

TESTfunda Spotlight brings to you a timeline of major events and milestones of the Arab Spring as it unfolded through the years.

Arab Spring
Overview:
The Arab Spring is a series of protests, uprisings and wars occurring since 18th December 2010. These protests started in Tunisia and sparked off a growing dissatisfaction in Arab countries with absolute autocracy fora long time, unemployment, rising food prices, human rights violations and corrupt government practices. The protests involved strikes, demonstrations, marches and rallies and the effective use of social media to garner attention, spread words about the protests and to organize, communicate and raise awareness about state attempts at repression, internet and press censorship.
Governments and pro-government forces have used violent means to crush these protests and protesters have responded similarly. A major slogan of the Arab Spring protests has been “Ash-shabyurid isqat an-nizam” meaning “the people want to bring down the regime.
In terms of their scale and significance, the Arab Spring movements have often been compared to the Revolutions of 1989, also known as the “Autumn of Nations”which overthrew the communist states in various Central and Eastern European Countries.
