An intense gunbattle struck Punjab's Gurdaspur district when terrorists attacked a police station killing six persons and injuring eight others. Among the six people were three civilians,two home guards personnel and an SP. Gujarat becomes first state to mandate voting

Gujarat has officially made voting compulsory in local body elections under the controversial Gujarat Local Authorities Laws (Amendment), Act 2009 (2014). The compulsory voting notification comes along with an ordinance for the addition of a clause the act for declaring the elected representatives disqualified if they do not vote. Any citizen who fails to vote during the elections if caught will be penalized — the punishment could be monetary fine or non-eligibility for certain civic incentives — which will be specified once the rules are framed.

Supreme Court rejects petition, orders to hang Yakub Memon tomorrow

The Supreme Court rejected 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon's petition against the death warrant and cleared way for his execution to be held tomorrow. Memon had sent a mercy plea to President Pranab Mukherjee which is awaited. The decision was taken by a bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra, Prafulla C Pant and Amitava Roy.

The Missile Man of India, APJ Abdul Kalam collapsed during a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management-Shillong (IIM-S). He was declared dead at the hospital probably due to cardiac arrest. His active involvement in the country's military missile development efforts and space programmes earned him appreciation from across the world.

Greece passes second batch of reforms to unlock bailout deal

Legislation has been passed by Greece's parliament on a second batch of reforms which will help unlock a huge international bailout. The bill was passed with the support of 230 lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament. These reforms had to pass if Athens was to move forward in bailout negotiations with its creditors. WTO members seal trillion-dollar IT trade deal

A first tariff-cutting agreement in 18 years has been signed between the members of World Trade Organization to cut tariffs on $1 trillion of information technology products from video games to medical equipment. Following this, more than 200 products will be added to the list of goods covered by zero-tariff and duty-free trade maintained by WTO. The deal is expected to jump-start the economy as more number of companies are expected to benefit from it.

In a bid to keep increasing abuse of internet by terror groups in check, the government has ordered blocking of at least 40 webpages with inflammatory content relating to a minority community, including posts on social media and popular video-sharing platforms. Following the order, the internet service providers have blocked most of such posts. However, the ones posted through a 'secure internet protocol' cannot be blocked totally.

Nepal may remove 'secularism' from new constitution

After remaining a secular nation for eight years, Nepal is contemplating the idea of removing the word “secular” from its new constitution. The idea was brought up during a discussion among top leaders of the major political parties. During the public opinion collection last week, majority of the people preferred the word 'hindu' or 'religious freedom' instead of using the term 'secularism'.

Jewellery firm Rajesh Exports buys Valcambi for $400 million in cash

Bengaluru-based jewellery firm Rajesh exports has acquired Valcambi, the world's largest precious metal refiner. It is for the first time that an Indian company is taking over an international gold and silver refinery in an all-cash deal of $400 million. Rajesh Exports borrowed from Credit Suisse and dip into internal cash reserves to fund the transaction. Valcambi refines about 30% of the gold purchased by India, the world’s largest gold buyer and has a total refining capacity of 2000 tonne. The acquisition will help Rajesh exporters obtain global footprint.

Google breaks up its social networking site Google plus

Google recently announced its decision to split the features of its social networking site Google Plus into independent services, allowing users to access them without signing in to the networking site. Google Plus is parting ways with YouTube following this announcement. Google Plus was created to take down rivals Facebook and Twitter and later faced disapproval from its users. The changes also mark a symbolic end of Google Plus as a social network.

Channel Tunnel from France to UK intercepts 3,500 migrants

The Channel Tunnel also known as Chunnel, saw 3,500 migrants trying to cross it amidst a number of dangers. Some of the migrants were injured and a corpse was found as Eurotunnel personnel and French authorities intervened. Both the countries are putting in efforts like installing barriers and adding lighting, which would allow drivers to see when migrants try to jump onto their trucks at night, for the safety of the migrants.

RBI grants banking license to IDFC

The Reserve Bank of India has granted banking license to infrastructure financing firm IDFC Ltd for starting banking operations in the country. Bandhan Bank to open 14 branches in south Indian states

China to build world's biggest radio telescope

With an aim to build the world's largest radio telescope, China has started assembling 4,450 triangular-shaped panels to the telescope's reflector. On completion, the reflector will have a dish with a size of 30 football pitches and will be called Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). The new telescope is set to improve China's capacity to observe outer space to a greater extent.

PM Modi launches projects to train 40 crore people

Memom had recently filed a mercy plea which has been forwarded to President Pranab Mukherjee. Following this a 14-day gap between rejection of mercy plea of a death row convict and his execution has to be maintained according to a Supreme Court verdict. Even if the President rejects his plea, he has a right to challenge the rejection of the mercy petition further delaying Memon’s execution.

30 people killed in Turkish blast IS suspected behind the attack

A cultural centre hosting anti-Islamic State activists was attacked by a suicide bomber resulting in the death of 30 people.  Most of the dead were university students who belonged to an anti-IS group and had been planning a mission to help Kobane residents. The Turkish authorities strongly believe involvement of ISIS behind this attack. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the attack calling it “an act of terror”.

Greece reopens banks, start repaying some debts

Greece showed signs of stability as it reopened its banks and ordered billions of euros owed to international creditors to be repaid. It had closed its banks and ATMs for three weeks to save the system from collapsing under a flood of withdrawals. Acceptance of the bailout terms and reopening of the banks have marked a new stage for Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, after months of difficult talks. Greece has begun making payment to European Central Bank, failure of which could have forced the country out of the Eurozone.

In order to climb this ladder, China plans to increase nuclear capacity to 58 gigawatts (GW) and to have 30 GW of capacity under construction by 2020.

Government proposes bond guarantee entity worth Rs 5,000 crore to boost market

In a bid to boost market and encourage cooperate investors, the government has planned to set up a guarantor for corporate bonds. The proposed Bond Guarantee Corporation of India with a net worth of around Rs 5,000 crore, will work as a non-government entity with a 51% stake for the private sector. The company will raise about half the capital through subordinate debt and the rest will be in the form of callable capital, which the government will provide as and when required. This move is expected to deepen and widen the corporate bond market.

Vidarbha Singh questions posting of Gujrat cops in CBI

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has raised questions on the “fairness” of CBI in recruitment of cops. No penalty till 3 days after credit card's due date: RBI

Reserve Bank of India has instructed banks to compute penalties three days after due date on a credit card holder. The directive is beneficial for those whose payment or transfer gets delayed due to a bank holiday or for any other reason. RBI signs Special Currency Swap Agreement with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka

A Special Currency Swap Agreement signed between the RBI and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka enables the latter to draw up to US$ 1.1 billion for a maximum period of six months. The swap arrangements provide a backstop line of funding for the SAARC member countries in case of currency volatilities.

New Development Bank launched in Shanghai by BRICS

Iran nuclear deal sealed finally

After18 days of intense negotiations, world powers and Iran have managed to strike a deal to curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for billions of dollars in relief from international sanctions. According to the deal, new provisions will be imposed for inspections of Iranian facilities, including military sites and Iran will be kept from producing enough material for a nuclear weapon for at least 10 years. The talks missed deadlines for the pact in July 2014 and November 2014, leading to long extensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin, termed the deal as "bad mistake of historic proportions".

After signing a 10-year defence framework in June and contracts worth $10 billion over the last eight years, the US is set to become India's largest arms supplier. Both the countries will start negotiations next week for the proposed $770 million contract for M-777 ultra-light howitzers. Various joint projects have been prosposed such as development of jet engines and aircraft carrier design and construction technologies . New Delhi and Washington have also talked about a co-development and co-production facility in India under their Defence Trade and Technology Initiative. E-filing of income-tax returns becomes simpler for Aadhar card holders

The e-filling of income tax returns got simpler as the Aadhar card number replaces the physical submission of ITR-V, a step of filling the returns online. Earlier, the taxpayers claiming refund had to o post a signed physical copy of ITR-V to the Central Processing Centre in Bengaluru within 120 days of filing the returns online. However, a new system of verification, termed as Electronic Verification Certification (EVC) has been introduced which makes use of Aadhar card number. Banks also will be providing such facilities to their account holders whose bank accounts have a validated PAN as well as know-your-customer (KYC).

Iran nuclear deal sealed finally

The talks missed deadlines for the pact in July 2014 and November 2014, leading to long extensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin, termed the deal as "bad mistake of historic proportions".

India is the fourth country to offer space-based satellite navigation services to the aviation sector.

Unmarried women allowed to raise a child says landmark SC judgement

In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court has ordered that an unmarried woman would not need the consent of the father to raise her child. Islamic State militants kidnap 111 Iraqi kids to train them to become terrorists

The IS has abducted approximately 1420 Iraqi children since they captured Iraq's second city.

44 people killed in bomb blasts in Nigerian mosque and restaurant

India to sign US' tax compliance law FATCA

Madhya Pradesh HC to hear government's proposal for CBI investigation into the Vypam Scam
