MoU signed between the Railways and LIC to start projects worth Rs. 1.5 trillion

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Railways and the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has presented a plethora of funds for the former. As per the MoU, LIC would provide Railways with a funding of 1,50,000 crores over a period of five years, to implement railway projects, starting from the current financial year. The announcement has come barely fifteen days after Railways minister Suresh Prabhu presented the budget and made his intention clear to allocate 100000 crores through extra budgetary resources, such as market borrowings and tapping low cost long-term funds to revamp the railways.

Karnataka secures eighth Ranji Title by beating Tamil Nadu

On the last day of the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament final, the defending champions Karnataka defeated Tamil Nadu by an innings and 217 runs. Tamil Nadu saw resilient centuries from Vijay Shankar (103) and Dinesh Karthik (120). Chasing an imposing 628, Tamil Nadu was batted out for 411 in 107.5 overs in the final session of the fifth day's play. The man-of the-match award for his maiden triple ton in first-class cricket was received by Karnataka's 23-year-old Nair.

Government to launch media campaign on immunisation

Ahead of implementing its ambitious health programme - 'Mission Indradhanush' in April, the government is all set to launch a huge media campaign to create mass awareness about immunisation. 'Mission Indradhanush' would mainly focus on four states, which have 25% of all unvaccinated and partially vaccinated children in the country. It aims to cover all children, who are either unvaccinated or are partially vaccinated against seven vaccine-preventable diseases including diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, tuberculosis, measles and hepatitis B by 2020. The media campaign would consist of television advertisements, jingles, posters and banners amongst others.

Indian women's hockey team beats Poland 3-1 in Hockey World League Round 2

In a high intensity final of the Hero World Hockey League Round 2 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Sunday, 15th March, 2015, the Indian women's team defeated the Polish team 3-1 to clinch the title. In earlier matches, Malaysia defeated Thailand 3-0 to take the third spot while Russia defeated Kazakhstan 9-0 for fifth place.

India to develop two islands in Indian Ocean

PM Narendra Modi's ocean outreach comprising visits to Mauritius, Seychelles and Sri Lanka has resulted in India's acquisition of ''infrastructure development rights'' for two islands in the region - Agalega from Mauritius and Assumption from Seychelles. India has signed four agreements with the Indian Ocean island nation to boost security and maritime partnership. This move has strengthened its partnership with Seychelles and provided India a foothold in the middle of the Indian Ocean. China had been overshadowing India in establishing its position in Indian Ocean by undertaking mega infrastructure projects in several littoral countries.

David Hale nominated by Obama as ambassador to Pakistan

Veteran diplomat David Hale has been appointed as the next ambassador to Pakistan by the US President Barack Obama. Mr. Hale has been serving as the US Ambassador to Lebanon since 2013. Mr. Hale has also served as Director of the Office of Israel and Palestinian Affairs, Executive Assistant to the Secretary of State and in other positions overseas in Bahrain, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia.

Kumara Sangakkara becomes first batsman in the history of World cricket to score four successive centuries

Sri Lankan batting maestro Kumara Sangakkara etched his name in the record books as he scored his fourth successive century against Scotland on Wednesday, 18th of March, 2015 during a world cup league game. This is an all-time ODI record as he surpassed Zaheer Abbas and Saeed Anwar of Pakistan, the South African trio of Herschelle Gibbs, AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock, and New Zealand’s Ross Taylor who have scored three successive centuries each in ODI cricket.
Sangakkara also became the first in world cup history to score three successive centuries, when he scored an unbeaten 104 against Australia in the previous match. The other two centuries before the one against Australia were against Bangladesh and England.

World Kidney Day observed on the 12th of March

World Kidney Day (WKD) was observed globally on the 12th of March 2015, the theme for which this year was - Kidney Health for All. The day is celebrated to create global health awareness and to focus on the importance of kidneys and reducing the impact of kidney diseases and related health disorders. The WKD was started in the year 2006 and is celebrated on the second Thursday of March every year. It is organised by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF).

Loans to differently abled persons to be classified as priority sector

The Reserve Bank of India has announced that the priority sector loans to persons with disabilities will be eligible for classification under weaker sections category. This provision will be effective immediately.
RBI guidelines direct banks to lend 10% of adjusted net bank credit or credit equivalent amount of their off-balance sheet exposure, whichever is higher, to the weaker section.

World Consumer Rights Day observed on 15th March

The World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) 2015 was observed on 15 March 2015 with the theme 'Helping consumers choose healthy diets'. The theme was decided taking into consideration the rise in number of deaths due to unhealthy diets causing overweight and obesity, high blood pressure, high blood glucose and high cholesterol worldwide. WCRD is an opportunity to promote the basic rights of all consumers and ensure that those rights are respected and protected, and for protesting the market abuses and social injustices which undermine them. WCRD was first observed on 15 March 1983 and has since become an important occasion for mobilizing citizen action.

Lewis Hamilton wins Australian Grand Prix

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne after beating last year's race winner Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg by 1.3 seconds. Hamilton, 30, has won seven of the last eight GPs though this was his first in Australia since 2008. It was Hamilton's 34th win in his 149th GP. This win also marked Mercedes' eighth straight victory.

Kidambi Srikanth wins Swiss Open

Indian Kidambi Srikanth defeated defending champion, Denmark's Viktor Axelsen to become the first Indian male to win the $120,000 Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold on Sunday, 15th March, 2015. The top shuttler suffered a hamstring injury and missed a lot of practice matches, but he came back strongly despite getting eliminated in the first round itself of the All England tournament. This was his third title in 21 months.

NABARD launches digitisation scheme for women self-help groups

The National Bank for Rural Development and Agriculture (NABARD) has started a project with the aim of financial inclusion, to digitise women self-help groups (SHGs) in order to facilitate easy and hassle free delivery of banking services. The programme was launched by the Minister of State for Finance, Jayant Sinha at Ramgarh in Jharkhand. Digitisation will bring transparency, credibility to the operations of SHGs through inbuilt grading and thus, will also increase the comfort of bankers in credit appraisal, disbursement and monitoring.

Abid Ali Neemuchwala appointed as group president and COO of Wipro

TCS veteran Abid Ali Neemuchwala has been appointed as group president and chief operating officer of Wipro. With Neemuchwala's expertise, Wipro is expected to overcome the issue of integrating software delivery teams with business units specialising in particular industry domains. Wipro has been lagging broader industry growth for more than four years, and is searching for a formula to boost its growth. Neemuchwala resigned as VP and head of BPO business at TCS just last month.
