RBI grants banking license to IDFC

The Reserve Bank of India has granted banking license to infrastructure financing firm IDFC Ltd for starting banking operations in the country. IDFC and Bandhan Financial Services Private Ltd were among the contenders for new bank licenses issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) who emerged successful. IDFC Bank plans to start operation from October 1 with an initial loan book of around Rs 55,000 crore.

India payed tribute to Kargil War heroes on 26 July 2015 to observe16th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. On this day, a wreath was laid at Amar Jawan Jyoti in Delhi by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and three service chiefs - Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha and Navy chief Admiral RK Dhowan.

Terrorist attack in Punjab, 6 killed, one terrorist eliminated

An intense gunbattle struck Punjab's Gurdaspur district when terrorists attacked a police station killing six persons and injuring eight others. Among the six people were three civilians,two home guards personnel and an SP. India tightened security on its border with Pakistan after the attack. The terrorists also attacked a complex where the families of police personnel reside. Condemning the terror attack, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said all measures will be taken to maintain law and order and ensure safety of people in the state.

Former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam passed away

The Missile Man of India, APJ Abdul Kalam collapsed during a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management-Shillong (IIM-S). He was declared dead at the hospital probably due to cardiac arrest. Kalam served as president for five years from 2002, enjoying the support of both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress. His active involvement in the country's military missile development efforts and space programmes earned him appreciation from across the world.

Bandhan Bank to open 14 branches in south Indian states

Bandhan Bank has planned to open 14 branches in five southern states- Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The bank and its branches will start its operation as the newest full-fledged of the country on August 23. It will be launched in Kolkata by President Pranab Mukherjee, becoming the first bank to be born in the eastern India post-Independence.

National Broadcasting Day observed across the country

This year's Fortune Global 500 employ 65 million people worldwide and are represented by 36 countries. Companies are ranked by total revenues for their respective fiscal years ended on or before March 31, 2015.

China to build world's biggest radio telescope

With an aim to build the world's largest radio telescope, China has started assembling 4,450 triangular-shaped panels to the telescope's reflector. On completion, the reflector will have a dish with a size of 30 football pitches and will be called Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). The new telescope is set to improve China's capacity to observe outer space to a greater extent.  

Shubham Jaglan wins second junior world golf title in two weeks

Ten-year-old Shubham Jaglan created history when he won the IJGA World Stars of Junior Golf event in Las Vegas. Coming from a rural area of Haryana, Shubham is a son of a milkman worked hard to achieve this. He had clinched a one-stroke win at the Junior World Golf Championships at the Welk Resort Fountain Course in California.

Websites inciting religious intolerance to be blocked: Govt

In a bid to keep increasing abuse of internet by terror groups in check, the government has ordered blocking of at least 40 webpages with inflammatory content relating to a minority community, including posts on social media and popular video-sharing platforms. Following the order, the internet service providers have blocked most of such posts. However, the ones posted through a 'secure internet protocol' cannot be blocked totally.
