Sania Mirza, Leander Paes create history in Wimbledon finals

The Wimbledon championship in London ended with a number of winners taking home the prestigious title. India's most successful tennis player, Sania Mirza along with Martina Hingis won the women's doubles final. While Serena Williams won the women's singles title, Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer to win the men's singles title. The mixed doubles title was won by Indo-Swiss pair of Leander Paes and Martina Hingis. Wimbledon boys' doubles title was won by 17-year old Sumit Nagal with partner Nam Hoang Ly.

Iran nuclear deal sealed finally

After18 days of intense negotiations, world powers and Iran have managed to strike a deal to curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for billions of dollars in relief from international sanctions. According to the deal, new provisions will be imposed for inspections of Iranian facilities, including military sites and Iran will be kept from producing enough material for a nuclear weapon for at least 10 years. The talks missed deadlines for the pact in July 2014 and November 2014, leading to long extensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin, termed the deal as "bad mistake of historic proportions".

US turns India's biggest arms supplier

After signing a 10-year defence framework in June and contracts worth $10 billion over the last eight years, the US is set to become India's largest arms supplier. Both the countries will start negotiations next week for the proposed $770 million contract for M-777 ultra-light howitzers. Various joint projects have been prosposed such as development of jet engines and aircraft carrier design and construction technologies . New Delhi and Washington have also talked about a co-development and co-production facility in India under their Defence Trade and Technology Initiative. PM Narendra Modi's has emphasised on production within the country under his 'Make in India' policy.

7th BRICS Summit held in Ufa, Russia

Held under the theme BRICS Partnership – a Powerful Factor of Global Development, the summit was attended by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dilma Rousseff, Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and Jacob Zuma president of India, Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa respectively.

AIFRTE opposes government signing of deal with WTO GATS

Fearing undesirable changes in the higher education system in India, the All India Forum for Right to Education (AIFRTE) today urged the Centre to not to sign the WTO-GATS(General Agreement on Trade and Services) in education sector. The deal will prohibit students from getting scholarship and the colleges will not get grants from the Government as education policies are likely to change. According to the protestors, economically poor and common man will not not be able to pursue higher education.

Development package of Rs One lakh crore for J&K, a probable announcement on Eid

According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is gearing up for an announcement of Rs 70,000 crore or Rs One lakh crore development package for J&K around Eid-ul-Fitr. The announcement is likely to be made either on July 17, when he is invited to a function in Jammu or at BJP's Eid-Milan gathering in Srinagar, scheduled around July 22. The package, according to J&K government, would include a considerable share for 2014 flood victims, who have not been compensated even ten months after the tragedy.

Islamic State attacks Italy consulate in Egypt

The ongoing bitter fight between Egypt and the Islamic State got uglier as a car bomb attack ripped into Italy consulate situated in the heart of Egyptian capital. A civilian was killed and nine people were wounded in the attack which was claimed by the Islamic State. According to an Arab affairs expert, the bombing was a clear warning to Cairo, since Italy happens to be a close political and economic ally of Cairo. The blast heavily damaged the 20th century building that once housed a school and became the Italian Consulate after World War II.

One Rank, one pension for High Court judges: Government to amend bill

The judges of high court can now breathe a sigh of relief as the government plans to fulfill their long-pending demand of one rank one pension. The judges of high court had filed a petition that said the number of years practiced as an advocate should be taken into account and be added to the service as a judge of the High Court for the purpose of determining the maximum pension permissible as judges selected from the Bar get lesser pension than those elevated from state judicial services. The Law Ministry plans to bring the bill that addresses the same in the Monsoon session of Parliament beginning July 21.

E-filing of income-tax returns becomes simpler for Aadhar card holders

The e-filling of income tax returns got simpler as the Aadhar card number replaces the physical submission of ITR-V, a step of filling the returns online. Earlier, the taxpayers claiming refund had to o post a signed physical copy of ITR-V to the Central Processing Centre in Bengaluru within 120 days of filing the returns online. However, a new system of verification, termed as Electronic Verification Certification (EVC) has been introduced which makes use of Aadhar card number. Banks also will be providing such facilities to their account holders whose bank accounts have a validated PAN as well as know-your-customer (KYC).
