PM Narendra Modi to launch new National Skills Policy on July 15

Country's first integrated national scheme for developing skills and promoting entrepreneurship is likely to be unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 15, on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day. The new National Policy for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship focuses on the need of promoting entrepreneurship as the key to a successful skills strategy which can generate wealth and employment for all citizens in the country.

7th BRICS Summit held in Ufa, Russia

The seventh BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit was held from 8 to 9 July 2015 in the Russian city of Ufa. Held under the theme BRICS Partnership – a Powerful Factor of Global Development, the summit was attended by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dilma Rousseff, Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and Jacob Zuma president of India, Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa respectively.

World Population Day observed on 11 July2015

On 11 July 2015, the World Population Day was observed with the theme Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies. The day was founded by the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, it was inspired by the interest surrounding Five Billion Day on 11 July 1987 – the date when the world's population reached five billion. It seeks to create awareness regarding the urgency and importance of population issues.

The Wimbledon championship in London ended with a number of winners taking home the prestigious title. India's most successful tennis player, Sania Mirza along with Martina Hingis won the women's doubles final. While Serena Williams won the women's singles title, Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer to win the men's singles title. The mixed doubles title was won by Indo-Swiss pair of Leander Paes and Martina Hingis. Wimbledon boys' doubles title was won by 17-year old Sumit Nagal with partner Nam Hoang Ly.

Iran nuclear deal sealed finally

After18 days of intense negotiations, world powers and Iran have managed to strike a deal to curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for billions of dollars in relief from international sanctions. According to the deal, new provisions will be imposed for inspections of Iranian facilities, including military sites and Iran will be kept from producing enough material for a nuclear weapon for at least 10 years. The talks missed deadlines for the pact in July 2014 and November 2014, leading to long extensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin, termed the deal as "bad mistake of historic proportions".

Sriram Kalyanaraman to be the next housing finance sector regulator

In a first, a person form the private sector is set to take over the position as the head of public sector financial institution. Sriram Kalyanaraman has been appointed as the managing director and CEO of National Housing Bank for a period of five years. In 2014, the new government had introduced management reforms by splitting the post of chairman and managing director-cum-CEO indicating that it is open to include candidates from the private sector.

Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan (RAA) launched by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

On 9 July 2015, former President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam launched the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan (RAA) in New Delhi. A concept developed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, aims to inculcate a spirit of inquiry, creativity and love for Science and Mathematics in school children. Under the abhiyan, institutes like IITs/IIMs/IISERs and other Central Universities and reputed organisations will mentor government schools. RAA is an effort to take forward the Prime Minister Narednra Modi’s vision of Digital India, ‘Make in India’ and ‘Teach in India’.

MakeMyTrip, RBL Bank, IRCTC in Fortune India Next 500 list

iPhone distributor Redington India has topped the Fortune Next 500 list of Indian companies which also lists MakeMyTrip, RBL Bank, Inox wind, IRCTC, ISMT , Emcure Pharmaceuticals and Orientcraft. The list features mid-sized companies having the ability of breaking into the Fortune India 500. According to the magazine, 434 of the Next 500 are privately held firms and are inclined towards manufacturing than services. These companies keep the wheels of the economy going.

Border development programme to promote Swachh Bharat mission

The border area development programme (BADP) which is implemented across 17 states with international land borders, will now have a wider scope which will include schemes relating to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, skill development initiatives and promotion of sports activities in border villages. The home ministry has modified guidelines for BADP which seek to promote rural/border tourism, construction of helipads in remote and inaccessible hilly areas with no road connectivity, and skill development training to farmers for use of modern/scientific technique in farming, organic farming etc.

RRBs recruitment process to be handled by IBPS

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) is set to handle the recruitment process in regional rural banks(RRB) to ensure smooth selection process. The move comes after the government was flooded with queries from RRB exam candidates over the shortcomings in the recruitment process. The government also raised the age limit by two years to 30 for candidates applying for officers scale-I posts. All direct recruitment procedures for RRBs in different posts / scales from the conduct of interviews to issue of final result, will be handles by IBPS.

Lt Gen Man Mohan Singh Rai appointed as Vice-Chief of Army

Present Eastern Army Commander, Lt Gen Man Mohan Singh Rai, has been appointed as the the next Vice-Chief of the Indian Army. ill replace Lt Gen Philip Campose, who retires on July 31. Rai is from the Corps of Engineers and is an alumnus of National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. He was commissioned from the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, on December 15, 1976.

Satellite-based navigation system launched

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) developed GPS-Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) system was launched by Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju. Built at a cost of Rs. 774 crore, over 15 years, the system offers seamless navigation to the aviation industry. India is the fourth country to offer space-based satellite navigation services to the aviation sector.
