Unmarried women allowed to raise a child says landmark SC judgement

In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court has ordered that an unmarried woman would not need the consent of the father to raise her child. The order has come on the back of a petition filed by a government employee who challenged the rule necessitating the disclosure of the father's identity while demanding sole guardianship of their child. A trial court had earlier rejected her demand for sole guardianship, which she later challenged in the apex court. The judgement was hailed as progressive for Indian judiciary by many people on various social media platforms.

US wins its third Women's Soccer World Cup

The United States of America defeated defending champions Japan 5-2 to lift the title of the Women's Soccer World Cup at Vancouver, British Columbia. The US last won the trophy in 1999. Sunday's win is their third World Cup title the first being in the year 1991. Carli Lloyd scored 3 goals for the Americans and was widely praised for her performance.

Islamic State militants kidnap 111 Iraqi kids to train them to become terrorists

Militants of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) have abducted 111 school children from various districts of the Iraqi city of Mosul to train them to become terrorists. The abducted children aged between 10-15 years, have been transferred to the terrorist group's educational and military centres for brainwashing. In addition, IS terrorists have also arrested 78 people who protested against the abduction of the school children. The IS has abducted approximately 1420 Iraqi children since they captured Iraq's second city.

Eurozone gives Greece time till Sunday to clear debt

The leaders of the Eurozone member nations have given Greece a deadline till Sunday, 12th of July, 2015 to come up with a proposal to pay back debt that will keep the country from crashing out of the Euro currency bloc. A meeting was held in Brussels where representatives of the 19-country euro zone decided to give Greece Sunday's deadline. The deadline has come after the people of Greece decided to not accept a bailout proposal offered by Greece's creditors.

One of the main purposes of the move is to make available digitally all government functions and services.

44 people killed in bomb blasts in Nigerian mosque and restaurant

Twin bomb attacks rocked the Nigerian city of Jos on Sunday night, which has killed 44 people while the number of people injured is 67. The first attack occurred in the crowded Yantaya mosque, while the second occurred in an elite Muslim restaurant, Shagalinku. The Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram is rumoured to have carried the attacks. The city of Jos has been infamous off late for religious violent attacks, the attack on Sunday being the second within the span of a week.

Department of Telecom opposes Facebook's Internet.org, approves Airtel Zero

After Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar asked the Department of Telecom (DoT) to form a panel regarding the issue of net neutrality, the DoT panel has opposed projects like Facebook's internet.org, which allows access to certain websites without mobile data charges while allowing projects like Airtel Zero. Net neutrality accords for the equal treatment to all internet traffic without prioritising a single company. The project by Facebook was opposed as the DoT panel thought it breaches net neutrality principles.

Amartya Sen claims that the government wants to control academic bodies

After being ousted from the chancellorship of the Nalanda University, Nobel laureate, Amartya Sen has accused the central government of attempting to seize direct control over academic institutions of the country. In a 4000 word candid essay about to be published in the August issue of the New York Review of Books, Sen has written about his exit from the Nalanda University and said that his exit was by no means an isolated incident but a calculated attempt by the government.

India to sign US' tax compliance law FATCA

India is due to sign a US tax compliance law Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which is designed to fight tax evasion on the 9th of July, 2015. The FATCA is an inter governmental agreement, which makes it mandatory to share tax information with countries where American companies and people have properties. Under the FATCA compliance agreement India will be able to access tax data of Indian financial institutions in the US from the period of 1st July, 2014.

Madhya Pradesh HC to hear government's proposal for CBI investigation into the Vypam Scam

The Madhya Pradesh HC will hear the application of the state government, to transfer investigation of the multi-crore Vyapam scam, along with the deaths linked to the scam, from the Special Task Force (SIT) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Meanwhile, the SC has agreed to hear a petition filed against Madhya Pradesh governor Ram Naresh Yadav and his alleged involvement in the Vyapam scam through his son Shailesh Yadav, who was an accused in the scam and died on the 25th of March.

The Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) or Vyapam scam is an admission and recruitment scam involving politicians, senior officials and businessmen in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB), popularly known by its Hindi acronym "Vyapam" (Vyavsayik Pariksha Mandal), is a government body responsible for conducting several entrance tests in the state.
