Satnam Singh becomes first Indian to play in the NBA

Indian basketball player Satnam Singh from Balloke, a village in Punjab created history by becoming the first player to be drafted in the National Basketball League. He was picked up by 2011 champions Dallas Mavericks and became the 52nd pick out of a pool of 60 players. Singh has been training at the IMG Academy in Florida for the past five years and has no previous experience of basketball at this level, and was elated by his selection.

US Supreme Court rules gay marriage is legal nationwide

In a historic ruling, the justice of US Supreme Court declared same-sex marriage legal across the United States. President Barack Obama termed the ruling as "victory for America". While a majority of the population welcomed the decision with cheers, Christian conservatives and anti-gay marriage advocacy group condemned it. The ruling brings to an end more than a decade of bitter legal battles with 14 states having to lift the bans on same-sex marriage.

Terrorist attacks in France, Tunisia and Kuwait kills dozens

Militants carried out attacks in three different countries in a span of hours that killed a number of civilians. The first attack was carried out in France, where a man stormed an American-owned chemical plant, decapitated one person and apparently tried to blow up the facility. In Tunisia, a single gunman managed to killed at least 38 people with an assault rifle at a beach resort. While the third attack was carried out in Kuwait where a suicide bomber blew himself up and killed 27 Shiite worshippers inside the Imam Sadiq Mosque.in the capital Kuwait City The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks in Tunisia and Kuwait and the attack was a first one to be committed against the Shiite community in Kuwait.

Egypt's ISIS affiliate claims responsibility for the wave of deadly attacks

Just two days after the assassination of Egypt's top prosecutor, the Islamic State affiliate attacked five checkpoints in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. The attacks claimed lives of 38 soldiers which included a powerful car bomb. The Egyptian army returned fire, killing 22 terrorists and destroying three vehicles carrying sub-machine guns designed for anti-aircraft fire. Islamic State's Egyptian affiliate claimed responsibility for the attacks in a statement on Twitter. Present Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi had recently pledged to carry out justice for the prosecutor general’s assassination – and possibly move to execute Muslim Brotherhood leaders, a group from which former president Mohammed Morsi hails. The militant attacks came as a prompt response to this pledge as Militants in northern Sinai had stepped up their attacks following the removal of Morsi from the presidential position.

A $268 million agreement signed between Tanzania and India's Exim Bank

Export-Import Bank of India has extended a fourth line of credit(LOC) with government of Tanzania for $268mn. The funding will be used for financing the extension of Lake Victoria pipeline to Tabora, Igunga and Nzega in Tanzania. The LOC is extended to the African nation on the behest of the government of India. The LOC agreement was signed in the presence of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and the President of Tanzania.

RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan warns that global economy may slip into Great Depression problems

The Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Raghuram Rajan has warned central banks of the world to be cautious as he fears that another depression similar on the lines of the 'Great American Depression' of the 1930s might be around the corner. He has warned against the ease in competitive monetary pricing policy, which he feels is an attempt to activate growth and could backfire. He also specifically mentioned the case of India and said that the country cuts interest rates to boost investments.

PM Modi launches smart cities mission to urbanise India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched three schemes to urbanise India, which are - Smart Cities Mission, Housing for All by 2022 and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and will cost a total of Rs. 4 lakh crore. Under 'Housing for All by 2022', the government plans to build 20 million homes for the urban poor by the time Indian completes its 75 years of independence in 2022. Under the AMRUT scheme the government will develop effective plans to facilitate the growth of a city and the SMART City scheme will help in developing new cities in order to cater the needs of a growing urban population.

Delhi government seeks DDA control, passes resolution

A resolution seeking to bring Delhi Development Authority (DDA) under the purview of Delhi government was moved in the Delhi Assembly. According to Aam Aadmi Party MLA Sanjeev Jha, the Delhi government has to make a request to the DDA everytime they intend to start a project requiring the land resource. Therefore, the land-owning body should be answerable to a democratically-elected government rather than the Lieutenant-Governor. Additionally, DDA had failed to serve the objective for which it was established as even after constructing 3.94 lakh houses in the Capital an estimated 60 lakh people living in unauthorised colonies are still in need of housing facility.

High profile Indian diplomat in New Zealand quits job after wife accused of assault

Indian High commissioner to New Zealand Ravi Thapar resigned from his post after his wife was accused of assault charges by a member of their kitchen staff. The staff member has alleged that he was kept in slavery, Ravi Thapar has however, denied all the allegations. He has now joined the list of disgraced Indian diplomats accused for mistreatment of their staff, the most prominent being the Devyani Khobragade incident in 2013 in the US.

Prime Minister to launch National Skill Mission on the 15th of July

India is placed at the 143rd position on the Global Peace Index, which is topped by Iceland

The Non-profit Institute for Economics and Peace released the Global Peace Index, which sees Iceland at the top position as the most peaceful country. India has managed a lowly 143rd position, far behind the neighbouring countries of Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The index ranks a total of 162 countries, which were ranked on a number of components like violent crime, involvement in conflicts and the degree of militarisation

Study reveals Indian Railways, Army are among world's biggest employers

With a cumulative workforce of 2.7 million people, two Indian organisations - Army and Railways – have been ranked among the world's biggest employers. According to a research published by the World Economic Forum, the Indian Railways stands at eighth position in the list of world's biggest employers followed by the Indian Armed Forces. The list was topped by the US Department of Defense which claims over 3.2 million employees on its roster.

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa win Canada Open

Indian duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa came out triumphs at the recently held Canada Open after they defeated top-seeded Dutch pair of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek in the women's doubles final. The Indian duo was ranked third and defeated the Dutch pair with a score of 21-19, 21-16 in a game that lasted 35 minutes.

In a thumping election win, AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa won the RK Nagar seat in Chennai by a record margin of over 150,000 votes. She was forced to quit the post after being convicted of amassing illegal wealth by a Bengaluru court which was later overturned by Karnataka high court. K S Sabarinadhan of the ruling Congress won from the Aruvikkara constituency in Kerala after defeating BJP by around 10,000 votes. The BJP defeated the Congress in an important by-election in Madhya Pradesh due to the death of BJP MLA Rajesh Yadav following illness.

Delhi Assembly passes budget for 2015-16

In a first, the AAP government has passed the Rs 41,129 crore budget for 2015-16, with a major focus on education, health and transport sectors. On June 25, the budget was presented by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and it was passed by voice vote by the House after lengthy discussion. In the budget, the government did not announce any hike in Value Added Tax (VAT) but raised the luxury and entertainment tax which will pinch those going to to gym, club, spa and restaurants. AAP leader Kejriwal hailed the budget as something "never seen before" as it received praises from the Opposition.

Union Cabinet likely to approve PMKSY irrigation scheme

The Union Cabinet is likely to approve the 'Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY)' that aims to provide irrigation facilities to every village by converging ongoing schemes, which are being implemented by various ministries. The scheme becomes extremely important as approximately 65% of the 142 million hectares of cultivable farm land available in the country is still not classified as irrigable.

India, China to speed up border row resolution

China has urged India to speed up the resolution of the border dispute between the two countries, when 18 rounds of talks on the issue did not reach a conclusion. Following this, the two have decided to hold a crucial round of boundary talks on the sidelines of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit at Ufa in Russia next week. India has been eying the boundary resolution with China as the key to a close bilateral relationship, whereas Beijing wants bilateral trade and commerce to increase with India without any land concessions to a country they see as having lost territory in the 1962 conflict. The special representatives talks in Ufa will be attended by national security adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese state councillor Yang Jiechi.
