PM Modi launches projects to train 40 crore people

The initiatives namely, National Skill Development Mission, National Policy for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship 2015, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme and the Skill Loan scheme were launched by PM Narendra Modi at an event recently. They were launched to mark the first-ever World Youth Skills Day. These projects aim to train over 40 crore people in India in different skills by 2022. Students completing courses from skill development programmes under the Government will receive certificates and even job offers.

1993 Mumbai blast case: Yakub Memon's hanging unlikely on July 30

The only convict in the 1993 Mumbai blast case, Yakub Memon, has managed to delay his hanging which was supposed to take place on July 30. Memom had recently filed a mercy plea which has been forwarded to President Pranab Mukherjee. Following this a 14-day gap between rejection of mercy plea of a death row convict and his execution has to be maintained according to a Supreme Court verdict. Even if the President rejects his plea, he has a right to challenge the rejection of the mercy petition further delaying Memon’s execution.

30 people killed in Turkish blast IS suspected behind the attack

A cultural centre hosting anti-Islamic State activists was attacked by a suicide bomber resulting in the death of 30 people.  Most of the dead were university students who belonged to an anti-IS group and had been planning a mission to help Kobane residents. The Turkish authorities strongly believe involvement of ISIS behind this attack. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the attack calling it “an act of terror”.

Greece reopens banks, start repaying some debts

Greece showed signs of stability as it reopened its banks and ordered billions of euros owed to international creditors to be repaid. It had closed its banks and ATMs for three weeks to save the system from collapsing under a flood of withdrawals. Acceptance of the bailout terms and reopening of the banks have marked a new stage for Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, after months of difficult talks. Greece has begun making payment to European Central Bank, failure of which could have forced the country out of the Eurozone.

Boeing signs pact with Tatas to develop aerospace and defence sector technology

US-based aircraft maker Boeing has entered into a pact with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) to develop high-end aerospace and defence sector technology in India, which can cater to the global markets. According to a Boeing representative, TASL will benefit from the deal by getting "significant work packages" in the aerospace-defence manufacturing space.

Make in India: India, Russia to jointly build 200 military choppers

Among the several defence projects on which India and Russia are working under the ‘Make in India’ programme, one of them includes manufacturing of 200 helicopters in India with Russian collaboration. This move is set to strengthen decades-old defence co-operation between the two countries. The upcoming projects may include Russian submarines and frigates being built. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a statement said that Russia continues to remain India's primary defence supplier.

National Career Service portal launched by PM Modi

In a bid to modernize all government-run employment exchanges, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched National Career Counselling Portal where job seekers can meet job providers. The portal is being set up under the National Career Service (NCS) project which aims at transforming all the government-run employment exchanges. Candidates can also avail career-related counselling by either visiting these centres or through its helpline numbers.

Stephen Hawking launches 100-million dollar search for aliens

Prof Stephen Hawking launched a new $100-million project named Breakthrough Initiatives programme, with an aim to discover extra-terrestrial life. The programme is funded by US-based billionaire and Silicon Valley technology investor and physicist Yuri and characterised as the “biggest scientific search ever undertaken for signs of intelligent life beyond Earth.” It plans to put the entire weight of modern day technology behind this mission by covering 10 times more of the sky than previous programmes and scan five times more of the radio spectrum.

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in Kashmir regarding terror recruitment

A growing number of youth joining militancy in Kashmir has urged National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to visit Kashmir to meet Governor NN Vohra, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and senior security and intelligence officers regarding the same. Doval is expected to review the security situation and devise a mechanism to deal with the "new challenge". The situation in South Kashmir is posing a challenge to the safety of the country.

Declare 'Ekta Sthal' as national memorial, urges BJP leader

BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia has urged PM Narendra Modi to declare 'Ekta Sthal', memorial of Jana Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee at Madhopur on Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir border, as a national memorial. Kalia said that it is important that the coming generations learn about Mukherjee who had played an important role in maintaining unity of the country, through ‘Ekta Sthai’.

China expected to be 3rd largest nuclear energy generating country

China is expected to acquire the position of 3rd largest nuclear energy generating country by 2017. According to US energy information administration (EIA), China will beat Republic of Korea and Russia in nuclear generating capacity by the end of 2015. Around 2017, China is likely to take the position behind the US and France by overtaking Japan. In order to climb this ladder, China plans to increase nuclear capacity to 58 gigawatts (GW) and to have 30 GW of capacity under construction by 2020.

Myntra gets new CEO as ex-CEO Mukesh Bansal becomes Board Chairman

Flipkart-owned fashion e-tailor Myntra put rumors to rest when it announced appointment of former McKinsey Director Ananth Narayanan as its new CEO. With its ex-CEO Mukesh Bansal occupied with his role of taking country’s largest e-commerce firm Flipkart, to the next level, Myntra had been looking for a new CEO lately. Also, Bansal was recently appointed as the head of Flipkart’s commerce platform. Following Narayanan’s joining of the company, Bansal will assume the role of Myntra’s board chairman.

Government proposes bond guarantee entity worth Rs 5,000 crore to boost market

In a bid to boost market and encourage cooperate investors, the government has planned to set up a guarantor for corporate bonds. The proposed Bond Guarantee Corporation of India with a net worth of around Rs 5,000 crore, will work as a non-government entity with a 51% stake for the private sector. The company will raise about half the capital through subordinate debt and the rest will be in the form of callable capital, which the government will provide as and when required. This move is expected to deepen and widen the corporate bond market.

Vidarbha Singh questions posting of Gujrat cops in CBI

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has raised questions on the “fairness” of CBI in recruitment of cops. According to Singh, more number of police officers from Gujrat have been posted in CBI as Gujrat being the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Singh’s statement comes as an attack on the CBI which had recently registered a Preliminary Enquiry (PE) against him and his family members relating to a disproportionate assets case.

Hurriyat chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani gets a nine month valid passport

Government has finally issued a passport to Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani that is valid for nine months. His application for a passport had been rejected twice by the government on the grounds of incomplete information. BJP, one of the ruling parties of Jammu and Kashmir had asked for his apology for his anti-national activities before handing him a passport.
